Gorky park, another big park, designed to impress with huge entrance gates. Inside it's looking rather neglected.
It includes an amusement park, but it's rather shabby and derelict in places - like an English seaside resort, only worse.

|
| There are several of these very imposing Moscow-style skyrapers - this one housing the Finance Ministry. They look even worse up close.

| There are still a few of the old statues around.
This is Karl Marx. The inscription reads "Workers of the world, unite!".
Perhaps he's not targeting the right audience - this statue is just outside
the Bolshoi Theatre.

| We joined a full house to enjoy a performance of Giselle.
The exterior is in rather a sorry state...

| ...but the interior is extremely lavish. In the centre is the Tzar's box where visiting dignitaries sit (and receive much applause from the audience on arrival). The audience stand to attention while the Russian and visiting country national anthems are played at the beginning.
