Sal is one of the Cape Verde islands - an independent country (since 1975) off the coast of West Africa.
Sal is a desert island - but definitely not the sort of island in the Bounty advert.
It's a barren and dusty place, about 30km by 10km, windswept much of the year, with little there apart from a few clusters of resorts.
There's quite a bit of building work for new hotels and apartments.
..at least there was until the financial crisis. Now there are a lot of building sites with faded signs of what might have been. |

| The road outside our hotel in Santa Maria.
- an enormous road, still being built
(very slowly) |
Palm trees loaded with dates.
Being an island, I was hoping for some good seafood.
The seafood at our hotel was basically tuna and 'serra' fish.
You could also get 'fish of the day' (tuna or serra fish).
And there was 'mixed fish' (tuna and serra fish).
For something different, there was 'vegetable soup'
(with tuna). |

| But the beaches are clean and even in Novemember the sea was warm.
And with the constant wind (of 20-30kph), it's an ideal spot for kite-surfing. |
| I thought I'd give it a try - starting with some practice on the beach. |
|
| These are big kites - more than capable of carrying you off down the beach if you mishandle them. |
